Behavioral internet: influencing people's behavior at work
When employees at an industrial site returned to the workplace after the pandemic forced its temporary closure, they noticed that sensors or RFID tags were being used to determine if they were washing their hands regularly, computer vision to see if they were wearing masks, and loudspeakers to warn people of protocol violations. This behavioral data that is collected and analyzed to influence how people behave at work is called the Internet of Behavior (IoB).
As organizations improve not only the amount of data they capture, but also how they combine data from different sources and use that data, IoB will affect the way organizations interact with people.
Total experience: creating a sustainable competitive advantage
Gartner defines its "total experience" trend as combining customer experience, employee experience, and user experience to transform a business outcome. The goal is to improve the overall experience where all these pieces intersect, from technology to employees, customers, and users.
Closely linking all of these experiences rather than individually improving each one will differentiate a company from the competition in a way that is difficult to replicate, "creating a sustainable competitive advantage," Gartner notes. Having a full experience will allow organizations in 2021 to capitalize on COVID-19 disruptors, including remote work, mobile, virtual and distributed clients.
Hyper-automation: automate everything or risk being left behind
A major trend that will accelerate in 2021 will be the automation of as many things as possible. Hyper-automation is the idea that everything that can be automated in an organization should be automated. This trend is driven by companies that have legacy processes that are not optimized, leading to huge costs and significant problems. Many organizations in 2020 are supported by a mosaic of technologies that are not optimized or connected, according to Gartner. At the same time, accelerating digital business requires efficiency, speed, and democratization.
Operations anywhere: successfully emerging from COVID-19
Gartner says that "an operations anywhere model will be vital for companies to successfully emerge from COVID-19" in 2021. At the center of the operations anywhere trend is an operating model that enables access, delivery and enable business anywhere, regardless of where customers, employers and business partners operate in physically remote environments.

In 2021, distributed cloud will allow organizations to bring these services closer together physically, which will solve low latency issues, reduce data costs, and help adapt to laws that dictate that data must stay in a specific geographic area. However, organizations will still benefit from the public cloud economy and will not need to manage their own complex and expensive private cloud. "The distributed cloud is the future of the cloud," says Gartner.

A cybersecurity mesh is a distributed architectural approach to scalable, flexible, and reliable cybersecurity control. This growing security trend comes as more and more assets exist outside of the traditional security perimeter.
